Care Home fined after fall from window
How often do you check your care homes window restrictors?
The following incident which happened in 2013 re-inforces the need to be vigilant in keeping a regular check on simple safety measures within your care home designed to keep residents from risk of harm. Take a moment to check your windows and make sure you have a regular inspection routine set up to identify and if necessary replace faulty or broken restrictors.
In June 2017, Guilford Crown Court fined a care home provider after an elderly resident fell nearly four metres from a window in 2013. The resident was reported missing at around 01.00hrs and found two hours later. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that the window restrictor which normally prevented the window from opening fully was easily overidden and not fit for purpose. Caring Homes Healthcare Limited pleaded guily to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The company was fined £450,000 and ordered to pay costs of £14,762.44
